The word “die” or “dice” comes from the Latin word datum, which means “something which is given or played.” Many people used dice for playing games and gambling. This particular die is made from bone or ivory, and six-sided like the dice we use today. Six-sided dice like this one were the most popular variety, and were called tesserae. The placement of dots on the sides was a way of representing numbers when playing with people who spoke different languages, and before written numerals were invented.

The term for gambling with dice was called aleam lūdere (“to play at dice”). In the simplest dice games, the goal was to throw the highest numbers. Romans loved gambling, especially at banquets, in streets, and around the campfires of military camps. The Romans loved gambling so much, in fact, that the government banned the use of gambling. If caught, gamblers would have to pay big fines and penalties. However, these laws did not work very well: the Romans would sneak around and gamble anyways. Even the emperors enjoyed dicing!

Some cities in southern-central Turkey, where Cyrus was from, would have dice oracles. In these oracles, dice throwers could get counsel for both their private and public concerns from the gods.
