MACRONS
You might notice the use of macrons over Latin words. Macrons are a long mark, placed above a vowel (e.g. ā ē ī ō ū) . These are used to indicate when a syllable should be pronounced with a long sound. Latin is a highly inflected language, meaning that the way some words are pronounced can affect the meaning. You’ll see when the use of a macron can be very significant in understanding the meaning – especially when you learn about verb conjugations in Unit 2 and ablative endings in Unit 8.
